Traditional Castile soap is made with one single oil and lye (made originally by soaking ashes in water to form an alkaline liquid). It gets its name from the Castile region of Spain. In France, Marseille soap is made with seaweed ash & olive oil and cooked in a large cauldron for 10 days. A similar method is used in Palestine.
This is our cold-processed version, meaning it is not cooked other than the heat that is naturally produced by the saponification process. A bit of sea salt and baking soda are added to the water to help reduce the stickiness of regular Castile soap.
This bar creates a low, gentle lather suitable for many skin types. It is unscented other than the beautiful scent of olive oil soap itself. These extra large blocks will last a long time and look great on display.
Castile soap takes much longer to cure than our regular bars and get better with age. The current offering is 3-month reserve, but they will become 6 month and increase in price at that point.
